British fine
artist Roy Putt was born into an army family in 1950 and grew up in
various army camps around England. Blandford Army Camp in Dorset was
also a popular motorcycle circuit in the 50s, attracting riders like
Geoff Duke and Jack Surtees (father of future 2 and 4 wheel world
champion John Surtees).
Blandford is where Roy Putt had his first taste of motor racing, with his house only six feet from the edge of the track! "I was immersed in the sound and the smell and the speed of the riders as they screamed down the hill past my front door." This had an insightful impact on his eventual motorsport artwork.
Like most kids he was always drawing and eventually ended up on a graphic design course at Bournemouth College of Art. "This being the mid-60s I was fascinated by everything Californian: the Beach Boys, hot rods, drag racing, that sort of thing." He was taught by Sam Rabin, a man internationally respected for his paintings of the sport of boxing.
A member of the Guild of Motoring Artists,Roy Putt is a regular exhibitor
at prestigious events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Coys
Historic Festival and the International Historic Motorsport Show.Roy Putt
has also exhibited at The National Motor Museum, Coventry Transport
Museum, Beaulieu, Donington, Gaydon and Brooklands, and is a prize
winner in the Planners International Motoring Art competition.
Roy Putt paintings have been purchased by enthusiasts and companies, including the John Haynes collection, Italy’s Quattroroute
magazine and Maserati U.K. He has undertaken a series of commissions
for the Royal Irish Automobile Club, Hastings Direct Insurance, Suffolk
Sports Car Engineering, Dragon Wheels and the XK Racing Series as well
as many individual clients involved in motor sport. His work has also
featured in both Automobile and Classic & Sports Car magazines.
